Whether you’re new to Florida, or born and raised, it’s better to be prepared when hurricane season rolls around, especially since these storms can be highly unpredictable. This includes your home as well as your business.
Although we don’t get hit as hard as the coast does, storms still cause a lot of damage and stress in Central Florida, including flooding, power outages, downed trees, and property damage.

We typically have about three days warming before major hurricanes and tropical storms make landfall. Here are our top tips to prepare for tropical storms and hurricane weather:
Have at least 7 days of supplies on hand, including non-perishable food and water, and at least 2 weeks of medication
In addition to food, water, and medication, stock up on the other essentials including flashlights, batteries, candles, games/puzzles/books for the kids, back-up chargers, first aid kit, paper products, pet care items, NOAA Weather Radio, cash, etc.
Make sure you keep your important papers and belongings in a safe, dry, and secure place
Skip the window tape and board up your windows instead
Trim the shrubs and trees around your home
Don’t touch metal fences following a storm, as downed power lines can cause the metal to conduct electricity
Don’t use charcoal or gas grills inside
Don’t use generators inside
Don’t drive through moving water, even if it’s low
Don’t go into heavily flooded areas, between debris, wildlife, and bacteria, this can prove dangerous
Stay away from windows during the storm
Create a family evacuation plan
Maintain a list of important phone numbers
Follow evacuation orders - better safe than sorry!
Consider sandbags to offer some protection against flooding
Fill your car up with gas
Make sure you have flood insurance, it doesn’t tend to be a standard part of home insurance - take a look at FEMA flood and risk maps to determine if this is an addition you should make
When the storm is coming, fill your bathtub and several buckets with water
Be a good neighbor!
Remember, it’s always better to be prepared for a hurricane or storm that doesn’t come than not be ready if it does hit.
